History of the wristwatch

The direct precursor of the wristwatch was the pocket watch, which was attached to a chain and carried in a pocket, trouser pocket or around the neck. The wristwatch was developed at the end of the 19th Century and was initially worn by women, as the chain attached to the pocket watch proved a hindrance while performing household activities. The then popular wristwatch rather looked like a bracelet that was worn on the wrist by means of a clip. Over the years the wristwatch was further developed, for example through bars on the dial housing where watchbands made of leather or other materials could be attached.

In contrast, wearing a pocket watch was still common for men back then. This changed with the emergence of aviation. Louis Cartier was the first watchmaker who manufactured a wristwatch specifically for pilots: the Cartier Santos, named after the Brazilian aviator for whom the wristwatch was developed. From now on, the wristwatch established itself in many different areas such as the military sector or the navy - and of course on a large scale in everyday life. Gradually, the pocket watch has been replaced almost entirely by the wristwatch.
