The Rolex Daytona, named after the race track in Florida, is probably the most coveted Rolex of all times. She was introduced to the public in 1963. As with Rolex tradition, this watch also was not to be just a pretty luxury accessory, but a precise working tool. The Daytona was developed according to the specifications of professional racers and quickly became a legend. It was often claimed that its popularity had been promoted by the movie "Winning" (also known as Indianapolis), in which Paul Newman, in his role as a professional driver, wears a similar watch. Newman himself could not remember to have worn a Rolex during the shoot and since this was an independent film with a tight budget, you can assume that it was not a Rolex that Newman wore on his wrist. However, this film, according to Newman's statements, prompted him to enter professional motor sports and after his debut as a racing driver in 1972, his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, in fact gave him aRolex Daytona watches. Newman allegedly wore this watch until his death in 2008. Although the name Paul Newman was linked with the 6239 Daytona model among collectors, which is still called the "Paul Newman Daytona" today, he mostly wore the gift of his wife, a model 6263. Certainly, Newman was one of the most recognizable faces of the Rolex brand, but he was never formally advertises the Rolex brand and spoke only to his passion for these watches in private.
The Daytona was a cheap and not very popular model at the start of production. Accordingly, only small numbers were produced and sold at first, which led to 1960s to 1980s Daytonas now being extremely rare and being sold for premium prices. Among collectors, the Daytona from any year up to 1988 is seen as the "holy grail" and at auctions these watches result in regular bids of $ 50,000. In the 1990s, Rolex introduced automatic movements and the current Daytona to the market. Rolex now deliberately produces limited quantities to keep the demand constant. The waiting period currently totals more than 10 years, which means that the "street price" for a Daytona, depending on the movement (Zenith or Rolex), is up to 9.000 ?, rather than the official price of 6.500 ?.
